Michael Blackwell Wins 2016 Scholarship Competition

The Limestone College Department of Music is proud to announce Michael Blackwell as the winner of the 2016 Scholarship Competition. This competition is held in conjunction with the Department’s annual High School Honor Band Clinic and seeks to reward a high-achieving musician with a generous scholarship to fund their post-secondary education at Limestone College.

Blackwell, a trombonist, currently attends James M. Byrnes High School in Duncan, South Carolina. At Byrnes, he is an active participant in the school’s musical ensembles, including the marching band and wind ensemble. Outside of his activity at Byrnes, Michael has also been selected to the highly-competitive South Carolina Band Directors Association All-State Honor Band for two years. Selection to the SCBDA All-State Band begins with students auditioning for selective, region-based honor bands followed by invitation-only auditions at the state level. To have been selected as a participant for two years in a row is a notable achievement for Blackwell.

In addition to his ensemble participation in school and at the state level, Michael also studies trombone privately under the tutelage of Limestone College Low Brass Professor Mr. Eric Henson. Through a combination of his study with Henson, as well as his own intrinsic motivation and undeniable work ethic that Michael was able to win the 2016 Scholarship Competition.

Blackwell plans to enroll at Limestone College beginning with the 2016-2017 academic year with an intended major in Music Education, with a goal of graduating and earning a position as a high school band director.
