In addition to his duties teaching percussion classes at Limestone College, percussionist and music educator Jonan Keeny is on the staff of the the Marching Saints and he is the Coordinator of Saints Percussion, Limestone College’s PIO indoor drum line. An Education Artist for Vic Firth, Inc., Jonan has served on the faculties of High Point University, NCA&T State University, Concord University, Bluefield College, and Southwest Virginia Community College. In addition, Mr. Keeny has done clinics at various PAS Day of Percussion events and County/District Music Festivals on the east coast.
Jonan holds multiple degrees in percussion performance from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has also done extensive drum set study with Tommy Igoe in New York City.
Mr. Keeny recently returned to North Carolina after a successful multi-year stint as a freelance drummer/percussionist in New York City, where he played with groups such as the psychedelic rock band astroviolet, jazz quartet The Magic Dust, funk/soul band Danny and the Danger, comedy improv band The Vigilante, and the motivational rock show Get Off Your Ass!, which released its debut album in December 2010. He also made numerous television appearances with the Amanda White Band, and he played Off-Off Broadway shows Denial: Time to Face the Musical, See What I Wanna See, and Trouble: The Musical. In addition, Jonan has played in bands backing Caitlin Kinnunen and Matt Shingledecker (Spring Awakening on Broadway), Carrie Manolakos (Wicked National Tour), and Taylor Trensch (Matilda the Musical on Broadway; Wicked on Broadway; Bare [Off Broadway]; Spring Awakening National Tour). Mr. Keeny has also worked with Jason Robert Brown on music from 13 and with Chris Miller on music from a number of his musicals. Jonan’s NYC experience also includes appearances at legendary live music venues such as the Knitting Factory, Arlene’s Grocery, Public Assembly, and Rockbar, as well as other notable venues such as Don’t Tell Mama, Daryl Roth Theatre, Theater for the New City, The Tank, The People’s Improv Theatre, and Therapy. He also recorded at notable studios such as SMASH, Flux, MercySound, and Grove Tower.
Mr. Keeny currently resides in Gastonia, North Carolina with his wife Mary Lauren and his main man Wyatt. When Jonan isn’t hitting things with sticks or mallets, you can most likely find him cooking, gardening, or training for various Iron-distance triathlons.
